Choosing between a granite and quartz countertop

Both granite and quartz are hard wearing workhorses when installed as countertops.
Granite is a natural stone that is quarried, then cut into the slabs you see when selecting the product. Natural colors include black, gray, white, red and blue. Slabs vary in visual texture from tight, regular coloration, to random swoops and swirls provided by veining in the stone.

On the other hand, quartz countertops can be either solid quartzite, or engineered quartz that is referred to as quartz. Ground up quartz crystals and silicon dioxide, are blended with a resin and color pigments to form slabs. Quartz is available in a range of colors and varies in reflectivity.

Natural quartzite countertops are quarried slabs of crystals with some color. Quartzite varies from white to gray; red, pink, orange, green and blue streaks are found where other minerals are interspersed through the crystals. Quartzite is incredibly heat tolerant.

Maintenance considerations for granite and quartz countertops

Daily basic maintenance of granite and stone countertops is simple, wash with water or a gentle detergent and dry with a soft towel.

Further recommendations include:

  • Granite should be maintained with a penetrating sealant at least annually to prevent staining
  • Quartzite and granite are heat resistant, quartz less so; definitely use a trivet with quartz, it’s not a bad idea with granite and quartzite either
  • Use a cutting board when chopping, more to keeps the knife’s edge safe than the countertop
  • Sharp heavy objects that are dropped and land the wrong way can chip a stone counter
  • Keep corrosive materials away from all three surfaces
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners on granite, quartz or quartzite
